The black ruby was fabled to be cursed, and the last owner had sealed it with seven protective charms in seven boxes and sunk it beneath the sea. When a dredger found the ruby and showed it to the village, people backed away in fear. No one would touch it except one impoverished young woman, who thought the jewel was quite pretty.
People gasped in horror as she touched it, but she just shrugged. "It'll bring me luck," she said. So she went to the next town, sold it, and lived a long, happy life off the proceeds.
